The Kathmandu District Court on monday remanded SSP Shyam Khatri, who was taken into custody on Sunday connected with a gold smuggling case, to four days in judicial custody. The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police on Sunday detained SSP Khatri throughout the Nepal Police Headquarters, Naxal, for his involvement in smuggling of 33kg gold through the Tribhuvan Airport terminal (TIA) on January seven. Khatri was produced before court on Mon. On January 5, a CIB team had arrested Gopal Bahadur Shahi in possession of 33kg gold. Shahi, who had landed at the TIA from the UAE, had managed to make his way through TIA security with gold. A week later, the CIB arrested customs officials Shree Narayan Yadav and Raj Kumar Dhakal for their involvement in abetting Shahi. On January 18, the CIB had summoned Khatri, who had been stationed at the TIA when Shahi had sneaked through airport with gold, to the headquarters for inquiry. Khatri was taken into custody on Sunday based on the statements of other suspects who were arrested earlier.
